A Note from the Webpage Administrator
We have not yet been able to get in touch with this center and collect a formal appeal, which we plan to do over course of time but which might take a considerable while due to our having to get in touch with a large number of centers, the remoteness of the centers, as well as their not having any readymade formal appeals in hand.

What we have portrayed below, therefore, is the philanthrophic/charitable activities conducted by this center as submitted in their annual report to the Ramakrishna Mission Headquarters.

As should be obvious, all philanthrophic/charitable activities of Ramakrishna Mission are supported through contributions from kind hearted folks and/or institutions.

This Institute, established in 1938 and shifted finally to its own commodious building in 1961, has a threefold aim:

  • A proper interpretation and appraisal of Indian culture
  • The promotion of mutual knowledge and understanding between India and other countries, and
  • The promotion of the study of the cultural heritage of India and of mankind as a whole.
From a modest beginning, the Institute has grown into a centre of learning and research, recognized by the University of Calcutta and the Indian Council of Social Science Research, and has drawn the interest of the public and also many leading scholars of India and other countries.

The Institute conducts:

  • A general library and reading room with about 1,70,000 books, 432 journals etc.
  • A children's library with about 13,000 books
  • A junior library for the age group of 12 to 15 years with about 6000 books.
  • The Universal Temple - a meditation hall and shrine
  • 335 public lectures and scriptural discourses by eminent scholars
  • 32 music recitals, seminars, symposia, etc.
  • A school of languages (German, French, Russian, Japanese, Italian, Arabic, Chinese, Persian, English, Spanish, Bengali, Sanskrit, Urdu and Hindi) with a roll strength of about 6500
  • Publication of a monthly Bulletin (49th year) and books such as The Cultural Heritage of India.
  • An International House which accommodates about 1750 scholars in one wing and another 850 guests in another wing.
  • A museum and an art gallery with the attached Sarada Devi School of Fine Arts and Crafts for children
  • Two Vivekananda Study Circles, and
  • A Research Wing for Indological Studies.
